Necco

Necco is a restaurant in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. Necco serves Japanese food but not like sushi.  It is more cooked food.  And my mom said she remembers that it first started as a vegetarian restaurant!  FYI-I love meat.  So that means I am the opposite of vegetarian!

I even ate reindeer pasta when we were in Finland.  🦌

Oh yea, and I ate fried rabbit in Italy, too.  🐰🐰

So we went to Necco for dinner.  We were expecting sashimi and that type of Japanese food because we saw their menu online and sashimi and other raw fish was on it.  But when we went inside and asked about the menu we saw, they said that what we saw was on the OLD menu.  We decided to eat there anyway.  It wasn't our first time at Necco though.  We have had lunch there before.  My parents were talking and I heard them say that Necco used to only be open for lunch from Wednesdays through Sundays.  My mom said "How do they make money?  There are only 5 tables.  And it's never full when we come."  It sounded like grown up talk so I asked my mom if I could have her phone to play video games.  😁😁

The restaurant inside looks super clean and nice.  When we sat down we saw a nice looking flower on the table.  Look--

About the food:

For our appetizer we got one order of vegetable tempura to share. The vegetables that were in it were okra, cauliflower, and lotus root. It was yummy because it wasn't greasy at all.  My parents said it was air fried not fried in oil.

There was miso soup that luckily came out hot --read why we were happy it was hot on my Raan Jay Fai review.

So there are plates that you can order which has the entree with omusubi--you can pick 2 different ones--and salad and some other vegetables.  My mom said I should explain what omusubi is in case you haven't tried it.  It's basically a rice ball with stuff mixed into it.  It's shaped round like a ball.  But I have had omusubis that were also triangle shaped.  Anyway, I ordered the Meat Plate with the carpaccio beef and for the omusubi, I picked the truffle and salt omusubi--that's the dark color one on the left corner of my plate--and the salmon omusubi with ikura--that's the one right above the other omusubi. I loved everything except the salmon and ikura omusubi. It just had too much of the green stuff they put on top of it.  The beef was really good.  Not too thick and cooked just enough.  FYI I like my meat cooked medium.  🐮🐄 🤭

Both of my parents got the Ocean Plate but only one of them really liked it. My dad liked it and got the truffle and salt omusubi with the shrimp tempura omusubi.  He got it with brown rice.  He said it was delicious.  But my mom always says my dad will eat anything because a long time ago, when he was in law school, cold pizza was considered delicious.  😝

My mom didn't really like it because she said the salmon was overcooked. The salmon on the Ocean Plate is cooked Japanese style so it's more well done and she likes it more rare.  She said she forgot to ask them to change it.  She got the truffle and salt omusubi and the avocado omusubi.

My mom also thought that this was more lunch food than dinner food.  Their lunch menu is not any different than our Ocean Plate or Meat Plate.  The only difference is maybe they don't give you all the same types of vegetable salads.  We all agreed that the dipping sauce that came with the vegetables was really tasty.  Kind of like hummus but not as thick.

Dessert: we got the double chocolate cake and it was very soft and it was amazing.  We were all going to share but I LOVE chocolate cakes so I ate most of it!  😋😋

If you want to try a different type of Japanese restaurant, you should try Necco!  The server is really nice and the food is fresh.
